Samuel Cooper 1609-1672 was Cromwell’s preferred artist to produce multiple official portraits in miniature. When Cromwell became ‘The Lord Protector of England’ in 1653 he did not want a flattering image painting with silks and ruffles like those of a King. Over one hundred miniature portraits where painted, all with a similar uncompromising face (warts and all), but wearing a variety of tunics. Only the noblest roundhead received one. Rex Marsden has reproduced this portrait, taken from a miniature, with some variations using oil on canvas.
Original miniature by Samuel Cooper.
