George Romney was born on Boxing Day, 1743 in Dalton-in-Furness, then moved to Kendal to study art before establishing himself by demonstrating his capabilities as a portraitist in London. The Gower Family were a well-known aristocratic family, who favoured Romney rather than Reynolds to paint this set-piece. Romney returned to live in Kendal in the summer of 1799 aged 56.
Rex Marsden reproduced his copy from a sketch, after visiting the much larger original, which is hung in the Abbot Hall Art Gallery in Kendal.
Original by George Romney.
