On a resent visit to the National Art Gallery in London, Rex Marsden (Local Artist) was impressed with the almost ghostly compositions of this little known Spanish artist. Zurbaran, who died in Madrid in poverty and obscurity, painted several life-size images of this Franciscan holding a skull in shadow, between the years 1635 to 1640. The Francisco Zurbaran lost canvases have now become popular and rightfully found there place in churches and museums around the world. Marsden’s reproduction is a quarter size of the original.
