The romantic poet William Wordsworth, 1770-1850, became England’s poet laureate in 1843 and deservedly had his portrait painted in a pensive mood by his friend Haydon.
The artist Benjamin Haydon, 1786-1846, was born in Plymouth but lived in London most of his life. In 1804 he attended the Royal Academy as a student, but six years later found himself penniless and in prison.
At the age of 55, he was painting quick portraits while lecturing on art in the northwest of England. It was in 1842, while after a dinner party at ‘Rydal mount’, he showed gratitude by painting this picture of his host.
