The most outstanding marine paintings of the 17th century came from the London art studio of father and son Dutch painters Van de Velde. After his fathers death, in London 1693, Willem Van de Velde the younger continued to record in oil paint on canvas notable sea battles for the admiralty and royal household; most of which were never seen by the public for over 200 years. Rex Marsden found this little known work of Willam’s called ‘Cannon Shot’. Marsden reproduced it in 2008 from a copy by Willam of his father’s original, painted for King Charles. The action takes place in British waters when John Paul Jones, a Scotsman, invaded England at Whitehaven. He was an Admiral of a small American fleet of ships. He also sailed under the Russian and French flags!
