Arthur Hopkins (watercolour artist) was the son of a prosperous marine Insurance agent in London. In 1872, he enrolled in the Royal Academy School and became a member of the ‘Watercolour Society’ at the academy. Two years later, he took a job as illustrator on the Illustrated London News. Hopkins loved to paint a fanciful countryside when ever he could, and often used the sketches when illustrating a story such as ‘The Young Visitor’.
Rex Marsden reproduced Hopkins watercolour using a different medium; oil paint on canvas. It possibly adds more radiance to the storybook picture and has perhaps allowed Marsden a little more definition.
