Known by art lovers as ‘The Kitchen Maid’ or ‘Vermeer’s Milkmaid’ this 1658 oil on canvas painting shows the quiet concentration of a woman pouring milk into a bowl. Again, like in many of Vermeer’s works of art, there is a fascinating play of movement with light and shadow that leaves you to construct in your mind what cannot be seen. Like Vermeer, Rex Marsden has tried to give great attention to details in this reproduction, which he painted in 2008. Marsden never attempted to age, fake or distress any of his copies for the commercial market. “It is impossible for many people to have the opportunity to see the original old masters paintings” Rex Marsden believes his exhibition copies may intrigue people to seek out and view the authentic originals.
