  • One of the best known exhibits in this collection of Rex Marsden reproductions is Frans Hals Laughing Cavalier. In reality the sitter is not laughing at all. He is smiling in a rather self-satisfied, provocative way. The artist Frans Hals (1580-1666) was born into a Dutch family of cloth makers along with his brother ‘Dirck’ who also became a painter. They lived uneventful lives in Haarlem and Antwerp where ‘Frans’ became famous in his own lifetime painting about 300 portraits, but he died in poverty. The original Laughing Cavalier is in the Wallace Collection, London.
