Turner was the son of a modest barber in Covent Garden London. While training as a topographical draughtsman he supplemented his income by painting portraits. This self portrait painted in 1798 was used by him as a sample of his work. By the age of 26 Turner abandoned portrait painting in his small studio, In search of the Sublime, Turner travelled widely, sketching grandiose scenery and painting from location throughout Britain making many friends in the world of art.
