Constable is ranked alongside Turner as one of the finest British landscape painters. His deep love of the English countryside is expressed in this work and by the fact that he never left the shores of this country to paint. He became a member of the British Royal Academy in 1829, but he was never really appreciated by his compatriots. Rex Marsden’s (2008) copy of Constables Haywain is only half the size of the original, yet he has captured a true likeness of Willy Lot’s cottage and the cart. He has tried to reproduce his painting in Constable’s ‘Barbizon’ style, but using modern oil colours on canvas.
