  • The leading portrait painter in the Dutch town of Haarlem was for many years Hals, a master of composition. This intriguing 1626 oil painting may remind you of Shakespeare’s Hamlet at the greave of Yorick, but there is no evidence of Shakespeare’s play being translated into Dutch in Hals’s lifetime. The painting was worked on quickly and boldly with the thick drapery being painted wet on wet in one layer.
Rex Marsden is an admirer of Frans Hals pictures and has reproduced many of his works.
