  • The ‘girl with the pearl earring’ is universally recognized as one of Vermeer’s masterpieces. This small portrait of a young unknown girl remained in complete obscurity until 1882. The original painting was worked in several colours before finally favouring a blue turban and black background. Rex Marsden captures a strikingly good likeness in this reproduction painted in 2008. Like Vermeer, Marsden prefers to work in a studio rather than on location and enjoys creating a composition with dark shadows from a single light source.
