Constable painted a series of barge pictures from sketches he made beside the river along the Stour Valley. The original was the first to be completed in Constable’s new studio. Out of the picture at the bottom left is the Flatford Mill footbridge where the horses have to be unharnessed to allow the bargeman to navigate his river cargo under the bridge. This is the second landscape of John Constable that Rex Marsden has reproduced on a canvas one quarter size of the original.
