  • Rex Marsden has evaded the challenge to paint a copy of one of Lowry’s northern industrial scenes (matchstick men), which Lowry became famous for. Instead Marsden has selected this little known self portrait of Lowry, which this shy Lancashire Artist painted when he was 38 years old. Laurence Stephen Lowry was really born on November 1st 1887 in Stretford and lived and worked for over 40 years in Pendlebury, both places within a few miles of Salford. In 1905, he secured a place at the Manchester Collage of Art, and as the portrait shows all aspects of painting where studied -even his own portrait. Lowry’s long life wasn’t easy. He died at the aged 88 in 1976, during which time only the last decade brought him fame. He was a modest man declining an OBE in 1955, a CBE in 1961, Knighthood in 1968 and CH in 1972 and 1976. He holds the record for the most honours declined!
