  • This exquisite, colourful picture ‘The Boyhood of Raleigh’ marks the final phase of Millais’s career in art. He had abandoned the Pre-Raphaelite style in the year this was painted. In 1870, to meet the popular Victorian taste, Millais made a sudden transition to paint modern paintings of a historic happening on location rather than using sitters in a studio which demanded new technical qualities in his work. “You can’t fail to read the story behind this picture” said Rex Marsden, who reproduced it onto a smaller 1,000x800mm canvas in 2008 - this Picture speaks for itself.
