  • Gainsborough was born in 1727. As a young man he lived in Ipswich and Bath, before he moved to live in London to develop his skills as one of England’s finest artists. He soon became a member of the Society of Artists and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1769. Perhaps because most of his clientele came from the nobility of London, in 1774 he moved to a new studio in the fashionable Pall Mall. One noble lady was ‘The Duchess of Devonshire’ who was known as the most flamboyant and influential woman of her time. She was vivacious and darling of the aristocrats. Rex Marsden has chosen her famous Gainsborough portrait to copy. She was also the great-great-great-great aunt of Diana, the Princess of Wales!
