Born in Edinburgh in 1846, Joseph Farguharson, the son of a doctor, combined a long prolific career as a painter with his inherited role as a Scotish laird. His first exhibit, at the Royal Scotish Academy, was in 1884. Joseph Farguharson knew his subjects well; often a winter snow scene in a country lane. This reproduction by Rex Marsden called 'Gathering Winter Fuel' was one of Marsden's fist attempts at painting a snow scene in oil paint on canvas.
