This 17th century young chap in his best blue apparel is Jonathan Buttall, the son of a wealthy English hardware merchant. The picture was painted by Thomas Gainsborough in 1770 on a large canvas 48 inches wide by 70 inches tall. It now resides overseas in the Huntington Library, San Marino, California, USA. Rex Marsden scaled his reproduction down to one eighth its size and painted it in two and a half days. Even though this Marsden oil painting is a small version of Gainsborough’s original it is a very good copy with the brushwork painted in the style of Gainsborough.
